Chapter Thirteen

Bear Bering waited until the woman with the whiny kid paid for her purchase and headed to the door, then he walked toward the counter with a six-pack of Bud.

The clerk nodded and looked outside. The woman was getting in her car and a Mustang was pulling up to the gas pumps.

“Make it quick,” Bear said, reaching into his pocket and sliding a rolled-up plastic bag across the counter, covering it with his big hand.

The kid reached into his pocket and slid a twenty-dollar bill across, snatching the bag when Bear uncovered it. Then he rang up the beer, told him the price, and Bear slid the twenty back.

He took his change and picked up the beer, then headed back outside. The kid with the Mustang looked over at him and nodded his head.

“Nice ride, kid,” Bear said, as he stashed his beer in the right saddlebag.

He slung a leg over the bike and asked, “Sixty-six?”

“Sixty-five,” he replied.

He looked like one of those uptight Ivy League punks, well over six feet tall, with close-cropped hair and the shoulders of a defensive linebacker.

“Here for the weekend to do some diving?” he asked.

“A week,” the kid replied. “Staying with a friend.”

Bear started the Harley, revved it a couple times, then nodded at the kid and took off, crossing the northbound lane and heading south toward the Seven Mile Bridge.

With his deliveries completed for the day, it was time to check on the plants in the grow house, and maybe have a little fun with Sky who was going to meet him there.

When he got to the house, her car wasn’t there, so he parked the bike near the steps, shut it off, and went inside to check on the work his guys had done that week.

Because he was the contractor for the remodel, the neighbors knew him on sight by now and they knew that the sound of his bike heralded the end of the workday, so they paid him no mind.

They’d been working on the house for three months, using the job as cover to grow pot in the garage and master bedroom while the owners were in Europe until the end of the year.

The renovations in the kitchen were nearing completion and they’d be starting on the bathrooms next, which would take a lot less time, mostly because they’d been stalling with the kitchen remodel until the plants matured. That way the workmen didn’t have to go traipsing through the bedroom to get to the bathroom. The master bedroom was full of nearly mature plants.

The kitchen’s island and countertops were finished, and he had to admit, the matching Italian marble looked damned fine. The sinks were installed, and he checked the cabinet beneath them.

Good, the plumbing’s all done, too, he thought, as he heard a car coming up the driveway.

He continued his inspection of the large, stainless steel, vented hood over the gas stove and oven. It was wired up, and when he flipped the switches on the front, the lights and fan came on.
